Our homes are often places where we can be comfortable and unwind. It is a safe space where we can detach from the rest of the world and unwind. Moreover, it is a place where our family and friends can all gather. During this time, if someone that doesn’t usually stay over needs a place to lodge for the night, a guest room will be the best way to go.

In the event that you have guests over, regular or frequent, a nicely decorated and comfortable guest room can make a world of difference. It can make your guests feel special and if they are coming off the back of a long journey, very relaxed.

Now, there is no perfect way to design a guest room. It can vary from one theme to the next, depending on what type of guests you frequent and also how comfortable you want them to be. However, there are a few general ideas that you should keep in mind when you are designing a luxury guest room. Think of these as the essentials with a few extra bits and bobs sprinkled on top.

Floors & Walls

The walls and floor of your guest room need to be designed well because they are the first thing that your guest will notice when they walk in.

Walls

The walls set the tone for the rest of the room, and we tend to match the color scheme and design of the room with respect to the paint on the walls. If you tend to be a little indecisive when it comes to your room’s looks, try to opt for wallpaper instead. Compared to paint, which is more permanent, wallpaper can be applied and then removed with more ease.

Once you have decided between paint and wallpaper, you can choose what sort of decorations you would like. For a more neutral and subtle theme, try to hang a painting that does not have too much going on, e.g. a flower or a still setting. If you want more excitement or flavor, a movie poster or tapestry could also do the job for you.

If you want to go for a more luxurious theme, try using bold and monochrome designs. Paint your walls colors such as navy blue, burgundy, and violet help to give them a sophisticated look. Furthermore, if you choose to add any decor to the walls, doing so against a dark background will help the decor pop more.

Floors

The floor in your room is as important as the walls. The simplest and most reliable design choice for your floors is to get a nice rug. Whether or not your floor has a carpet on it or not, a rug is always the perfect way to liven up the surroundings.

When getting an area rug, try to find a color that compliments either the walls or the furniture in the room. You want to have a rug with a protective pad underneath it so that it stays in place and does not damage the part of the floor that it is on. For a bedside rug, make sure you get one that is soft and plush so that your guest can have a soft surface to put their feet on when they get up.

It sounds extra, but it is a very subtle way to start their day off in comfort. When you place your feet on a soft surface right as you get up, you will feel cared for and relaxed, which emulates the experience you get in a luxury hotel.

Furniture

The furniture in your room will help to shape its personality. Usually, a guest room is an impromptu final resting place for different furniture pieces around the house. However, things might need to be done differently for a luxurious guest room. The furniture essentials include a bed, side tables, a dresser, and a wardrobe.

These are the basics that can serve more than one purpose. For example, your side tables can double as extra storage for nighttime medicine and a wireless charger. Your wardrobe can also double as extra storage for things you might need to use from time to time.

When you design a luxury guest room, make sure your side tables are built using durable materials and also have exceptional finishes like mahogany wood to last longer and look nice. When picking out a bed frame, you want one that all kinds of people can use. Don’t pick one that is too high or too low so your guests don’t struggle to get on or off.

If you are repurposing old furniture, paint them all the same color to maintain a uniform theme. If any parts of the upholstery are frayed, damaged, or torn, get them reupholstered to bring them back to life. This will save you money and also give your existing furniture a longer life.

To complete the guest room’s furniture, add a nice writing table in a corner. This will allow your guests to get any work done in the privacy of the guest room. Place it near a power outlet in case they might need to charge a phone or laptop.

Lighting

A guest room should have different forms of lighting in it to allow different types of moods. Opt for incandescent bulbs on your side tables if you want a cozier feel. These bulbs provide a warm light that is perfect for relaxing at night when you aren’t yet ready to go to bed.

Your ceiling lights can either be a mini-chandelier or some sort of pendant lighting. If you are hoping for a luxury aesthetic, having a mini-chandelier is the perfect way to do so. Opt for a mix of white and yellow light to ensure you aren’t going too bright or too yellow because not everyone has the same preferences.

To add some character to your guest room, you can also add candle lights. Candles do not necessarily provide light or warmth like they once did, but it is always a nice touch for your room.

Final Thoughts

When designing a luxury guest room, you need to make sure you remember that the guests will not live there full time. However, your guests also need a comfortable, quiet, and well-lit place. The last thing you want is for guests to come over and have a miserable time, even if they never mention it to you.
